let them eat cake!

Hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween! Mine was a blast! This is one of my favorite holidays but the issue with dressing up for Halloween is that I usually have to buy two costumes: one appropriate for work and one for a night out on the town. Last year, I had on an orange top with cat ears and cat eye contacts. I drew on whiskers and was a cat for Halloween. Done and done.

But I’ve been challenging myself all year and I wanted to make an awesome costume this Halloween.

McCall's 6097

McCall's 6097 Line Sheet

This pattern was perfect for Marie Antoinette. I didn’t want to make the full length version of this gown because I didn’t want to deal with all that fabric, especially for just one night. It would also make this project more expensive.

So how short do I make it? Mid-thigh would be flirty and youthful but I wouldn’t be able to wear it to work. Knee-length would be more appropriate but not cheeky. How could I get both looks without having to make two skirts?

Track casing inside skirt

Voila! I added two tracks inside the skirt and ribbons to pull up to shorten or lengthen the skirt.

Flirty!

Back

I added pick ups to the back.

I added contrasting lining to the sleeve since I had fabric left over.

So proud of myself for making this!

Amazing costume! And a what a great way to spend your time locked in during the hurricane. I still can’t get over how innovative you were with the automatic skirt shortener. What a great idea!
